چکیده
UNLABELLED Strychnos nux-vomica Linn. (SNV; Loganiaceae), a medicinal plant has been used as folk medicine for alleviating inflammation, joint pains and allergic symptoms. In the present study, we examined its possible immunomodulatory effect on induction of ovalbumin (OVA)-specific IgE antibody response in a murine model, as evaluated by passive cutaneous anaphylaxis (PCA). The OVA-specific IgE antibody response was significantly suppressed in BALB/c mice (H-2d), following intraperitoneal administration of aqueous stem extract of the plant along with OVA. Furthermore, the different doses of SNV extract were found to significantly suppress the induction of OVA-specific IgE antibody response. The anti-OVA IgE antibody response was suppressed in different haplotypes of mice viz., C57BL/6 (H-2b) and SWR/J (H-29). However, preliminary findings revealed no significant change in the total IgG antibody response against OVA, as evaluated by ELISA. These results confirm the suppressive activity of S. nux-vomica on allergen-specific IgE antibody response and suggest its possible application in allergic conditions. The seeds of Strychnos nuxvomica Linn. (Loganiaceae) were processed as prescribed in the Ayurvedic classics. The seeds were soaked in Kanji (3 days; Sample A); boiled in cow milk (3 h; Sample B); soaked in cow urine (7 days), boiled in cow milk (3 h) and roasted in cow ghee (till swollen; Sample C) and a sample roasted in cow ghee (till swollen; Sample D). The processed nux vomica were compared...

Some plants used in Unani system of medicine are toxic, even deadly poisonous. The drugs having such plants as their components are detoxified before they are dispensed to the patients. One such drug, capsule Hudar, has Strychnos nux-vomica L. (Azraqi) seeds as one of its components and is very effectively used to elevate blood pressure. Ancient manuscripts describe many methods of its detoxifi...

BACKGROUND Malaria is a major public health problem in the world which is responsible for death of millions particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. Today, the control of malaria has become gradually more complex due to the spread of drug-resistant parasites. Medicinal plants are the unquestionable source of effective antimalarials. The present study aimed to evaluate antiplasmodial activity and acu...
متن کاملStrychnos nux-vomica seeds: Pharmacognostical standardization, extraction, and antidiabetic activity
BACKGROUND Strychnos nux-vomica, commonly known as kuchla, contains strychnine and brucine as main constituents. Minor alkaloids present in the seeds are protostrychnine, vomicine, n-oxystrychnine, pseudostrychnine, isostrychnine, chlorogenic acid, and a glycoside. Seeds are used traditionally to treat diabetes, asthma, aphrodisiac and to improve appetite. OBJECTIVE The present study was aime...
متن کاملA rare case of strychnine poisoning by consumption of Strychnos nux- vomica leaves
Strychnine is one of the oldest poisons known to man. The source of this potent toxin is the Strychnos nux-vomica plant, which actually contains two distinct alkaloidsstrychnine and brucine. Although principally found in the seeds, these alkaloids can be isolated in varying concentrations from virtually all parts of the plant including the bark, leaves and roots[1]. Once consumed, strychnine pr...
